My Statement as an Advocate of Science & Technology

I recognize that the state of Science and Technology (S & T) in the Philippines is low as confirmed by several indicators such as S & T education and research outputs. Our S & T education suffers from the lack of quality facilities and lack of properly trained and competent Science teachers resulting to students with poor Science education. On the other hand, our S & T sector suffers from the lack of significant government financial support for Research and Development (R & D) resulting to low research output.

I understand that S & T education is a necessary component in attaining progress and advancement of the country. Our government should play an important role in supporting S & T education. Our S & T education should also aim to produce broad-minded and well-rounded Scientists and Technologists. We need Scientists and Technologists who have the proper training and vision for our country. They must be able to perceive our needs and problems, and translate their knowledge to working solutions in the Philippine context.

I also understand that researches should be oriented toward the production of our own appropriate technologies. Appropriate technologies are relevant and beneficial technologies that are adapted to the economic and social conditions of the country. For instance, the appropriate technology in industry is a technology that increases the quality and lowers the production cost of our locally manufactured or processed products. The appropriate technology in agriculture is a technology that provides more efficient food production. I also recognize the fact that as conditions change, what is appropriate also changes.

I further recognize that S & T can liberate the country from its dependence on imported products and technologies. With substantial government financial support, the Scientists and Technologists who have vision for our country can produce our own high-yield varieties, fertilizers, pesticides, farming equipment, alternative energy sources, pharmaceutics, chemicals, steel and others.

I write this statement to invite others to join us in our campaign for a proper direction in our S & T. We should make Science a tool in achieving national development.
